Timnit Gebru

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and the inherent biases of machine learning algorithms are two threats that renowned AI ethicist and founder of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DAIR) Timnit Gebru has repeatedly warned about.

In a lecture given in February 2023 at Stanford University, Gebru argued that the concept of creating a system capable of doing any activity had origins in eugenics and transhumanism. She also wondered who would gain and lose under such a system.

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, believes that the future of artificial intelligence will be brighter. Hassabis predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) would surpass human intelligence over the next five years in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal. He was addressing the audience at the Future of Everything Festival, hosted by the media organization.

Hassabis said that the current rapid pace of AI development might further accelerate. He remarked on how far things had come in recent years and expressed optimism that the trend would continue.

There is not any reason why advancement won't continue at its current rate. It may speed up. So I believe we may be only a few years, maybe within a decade," he was cited as saying by the news agency.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, was recently interviewed by CBS's 60 Minutes, where he discussed his thoughts on where AI is headed. He said that people need to be ready for the fast speed of technological development and that AI will be as beneficial or harmful as human nature permits.

The latest Google chatbot, Bard, was also introduced; it can produce material like speeches, blogs, and emails.
